Meet the Elf!
The Elf is a favorite imaginative character found in forests, fairy tales, and Santa’s workshop.
Elves come from very old folk tales of Northern Europe, especially from Scandinavia and Germany. In the oldest stories, elves were magical forest beings who could be helpful or full of mischief. Later, about 200 years ago, stories and poems about Santa Claus gave him tiny elf helpers who make toys at the North Pole.
Elves appear in many different ways: as Santa's busy toymakers, as the tall, wise elves of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and as Dobby, the brave house-elf in the Harry Potter books. In the Grimm brothers' tale The Elves and the Shoemaker, tiny elves secretly help a poor shoemaker at night.
