Meet the Fairy!
The Fairy is a favorite imaginative character found in fairy tales, gardens, and magical forests.
Fairy stories have been told for a very long time, especially in Ireland, Scotland, England and France. In old folk tales, fairies were magical beings of nature, living in hills, woods and flowers, who could bring good luck or play tricks on people. Over time, storybooks began to show them as tiny, friendly helpers with shining wings.
Famous fairies include Tinker Bell in Peter Pan, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and the Sugar Plum Fairy in the ballet The Nutcracker. In many countries, children leave a lost tooth under their pillow for the Tooth Fairy, while in Spain and Latin America a little mouse called Ratoncito Pérez collects it instead.
Where would you typically find a Fairy in stories?
Have children draw their own fairy with sparkly wings, then imagine what kind of magical fairy dust it might sprinkle and what it would do.
Make a tiny pretend fairy home out of flowers, leaves, or small boxes in the garden or on a windowsill, and talk about what a fairy might need there.
