🎬 Procedure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Ask: "What time do you wake up? What time do you eat lunch?" Let students share, then point out that clocks have two hands that work together to show us the time.

I Do: Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Using the large demonstration clock, explain that the short hand points to the hour and the long hand points to the minutes. Show a time "to the hour" (long hand on 12) and read it aloud together ("3 o'clock"). Then show a time "to the half hour" (long hand on 6) and explain it means 30 minutes past the hour ("3:30").

We Do: Guided Practice (15 minutes)

As a class, set the demonstration clock to several different times to the hour and half hour, with students calling out the time together each time. Then reverse it: call out a time and have a student volunteer set the demonstration clock to match.

You Do: Independent Practice (7 minutes)

Students use their own paper clocks to set several times called out one at a time (e.g., "set your clock to 5 o'clock," "set your clock to 8:30"), checking their own work against a partner's.

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

Ask a few students to share a time that's meaningful to them (dinner time, bedtime) and set their clock to show it, connecting the skill back to real life.

✅ Assessment

Check that students can correctly set their paper clock for both hour and half-hour times when called out, and that they can correctly read a time already shown on a clock, not just set one.

🎚️ Differentiation

Support: Start with hour-only times and add half-hour times once those feel solid. Extension: Introduce quarter-hour times (15 and 45 minutes past) for students ready for a further challenge.
