Ask: "If two friends want to share one cookie fairly, how would you split it?" Let students describe their idea before introducing any formal vocabulary.
Fold a paper circle in half in front of the class, showing two equal pieces. Introduce "half" and the written form 1/2, explaining that the bottom number shows how many equal pieces the whole was split into, and the top number shows how many of those pieces we're talking about. Repeat with quarters (folding in half twice), introducing 1/4.
As a class, fold paper shapes together into halves, thirds, and quarters, writing the fraction for each piece as a class. Compare a quarter to a half side by side, asking "which piece is bigger?" to build the concept that more pieces means smaller pieces — see our teaching fractions with everyday objects guide for more on this common early misconception.
Students fold their own paper shape into a fraction of their choice (half, third, or quarter), label it with the correct fraction notation, and color in one piece to show that fraction visually.
If available, physically cut a cracker or fruit slice into the fraction pieces discussed, connecting the paper-folding activity back to a real, familiar object.
Check that the independent folding task shows the correct number of equal pieces for the chosen fraction, that the written notation matches (numerator/denominator correctly identified), and that the colored-in portion matches the labeled fraction.
Support: Provide pre-folded shapes and focus only on labeling and coloring, removing the folding step. Extension: Ask advanced students to find and label eighths, and compare an eighth to a quarter and a half in size order.
