Vroom! Meet the Seaplane.
A Seaplane is a plane that lands on water, famous for taking off and landing right on lakes, rivers, or the ocean.
A seaplane is an airplane that can take off from and land on water. Some have long floats under the wings, called pontoons, that keep them on top of the water. Others, called flying boats, have a body shaped like a boat. To take off, the pilot speeds across the water until the wings lift the plane into the air.
Seaplanes are used in places with lots of lakes and islands, such as Canada, Alaska and the Maldives, where they work like flying taxis. Firefighting seaplanes can even skim across a lake to scoop up water and then drop it on a wildfire.
What is the main job of a Seaplane?
Have children float a toy plane in a bin of water, then talk about how a real seaplane takes off and lands on lakes.
Draw a seaplane landing on a lake next to a remote island, and talk about why it doesn't need a runway.
Floats or a boat-shaped body.
Yes, even on remote lakes.
For reaching islands or areas with no nearby airport.
Some have wheels too, so they can land on both.
