Nikola Tesla — a brilliant mind in electrical engineering
Nikola Tesla was a brilliant scientist known for developing alternating current (AC) electricity.
Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in a village in what is now Croatia. He studied engineering and moved to the United States in 1884, where he briefly worked for Thomas Edison. Tesla believed alternating current, or AC, was better for sending electricity over long distances, and he invented a motor that could run on it. He also experimented with radio waves, wireless lighting and the famous Tesla coil, which makes giant sparks.
The AC power system Tesla helped develop still delivers electricity to almost every home and school. His work on radio and wireless energy helped lead to remote controls and wireless charging. A unit used to measure magnetic fields is named the tesla in his honor.
What is Nikola Tesla best known for?
Have children draw a lightning bolt or a glowing lightbulb, then talk about how electricity travels through wires to power the things we use every day.
Trace where the electricity goes from an outlet to a lamp or toy, and talk about how Tesla's AC system helps power travel long distances.
