Leonardo da Vinci — a brilliant mind in art, science, and invention
Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant scientist known for painting famous artworks and sketching futuristic inventions.
Leonardo da Vinci was born near the town of Vinci in Italy in 1452. He trained as a painter and became one of the greatest artists ever, painting the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. But he was also curious about everything: he filled thousands of notebook pages with drawings of the human body, birds in flight, water swirling in rivers and inventions such as flying machines, often writing backwards in mirror writing.
Leonardo showed that art and science go together. His careful drawings of muscles and bones were far ahead of his time, and many of his invention ideas inspired later engineers. He is a great example of learning by observing closely and sketching what you see, which is why so many science classes still use drawing.
What is Leonardo da Vinci best known for?
Have children design and draw their own imaginative flying machine, just like da Vinci's early helicopter sketches.
Try writing your name backwards and then check it in a mirror, just like da Vinci's famous mirror-writing notes.
The Mona Lisa.
He sketched flying machines and helicopters centuries early.
Muscles, bones, and how they move.
A mirror was needed to read them normally.
