Your amazing lungs at work!
Your Lungs helps your body by breathing in fresh air and breathing out used air.
When you breathe in, a big muscle under your lungs called the diaphragm moves down and your lungs fill with air. The air travels down your windpipe into smaller and smaller tubes that end in millions of tiny air sacs. There, oxygen passes into your blood, and a waste gas called carbon dioxide passes out, so you breathe it away when you breathe out.
Running, swimming and playing games help your lungs work well. Stay away from smoke, including cigarette smoke and smoke from fires, because it hurts your lungs. Cough or sneeze into your elbow and wash your hands to stop colds and flu germs spreading from person to person.
What is the main job of your lungs?
Have children blow bubbles and talk about how their lungs push air out to make the bubbles, then take a few slow, deep breaths together.
Notice how breathing speeds up after jumping around, and talk about why your lungs need to bring in more oxygen when you're active.
