Your amazing heart at work!
Your Heart helps your body by pumping blood all around your body.
Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist, sitting in your chest between your lungs. It has four rooms called chambers. The right side pumps blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen, and the left side pumps that fresh blood out to your whole body through tubes called arteries. Blood comes back to the heart through veins, and the journey starts again.
Your heart gets stronger when you are active, so running, swimming, dancing and climbing are all good for it. Eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and not having too many salty or sugary snacks, also helps. Try counting your heartbeats for one minute while resting, then again after jumping, and see how much faster your heart works.
What is the main job of your heart?
Have children feel their heartbeat, then do 20 jumping jacks and feel it again, talking about how exercise makes the heart beat faster.
Use a paper cup as a pretend stethoscope to listen to a heartbeat, and talk about how the heart pumps blood all day and night.
