Meet the Alien!
The Alien is a favorite imaginative character found in outer space and science-fiction stories.
For hundreds of years, people have looked at the night sky and wondered if anyone else was out there. Stories about visitors from other worlds became very popular about 130 years ago, after the book The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. Since then, writers and filmmakers have imagined aliens of every shape: friendly, funny, scary or wise.
Famous story aliens include E.T., who just wants to phone home, and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. Real scientists are searching for signs of life too, by sending robot rovers to Mars and listening for radio signals from space, but so far no one has found any aliens.
Where would you typically find an Alien in stories?
Have children draw their own alien character, imagining what colors, eyes, and features it might have, then share their drawings and stories with the class.
Look at pictures of the night sky together and talk about how real scientists explore space to learn more about our universe.
No one has proven real aliens exist, but scientists study space to find out more.
Often big eyes, green skin, or antennas, though every artist imagines them differently.
Faraway planets and stars out in outer space.
They let us imagine life beyond Earth, sparking curiosity and creativity.
