Purple is a magical secondary color often associated with kings, queens, and wizards!

Purple (also called Violet) is a beautiful secondary color made by mixing two primary colors: Red and Blue. Throughout history, purple has been known as the color of royalty, magic, and wisdom. Because it was once very hard and expensive to make purple dye, only kings and queens could afford to wear it! Today, we see purple everywhere in nature, from delicious fruits to fragrant flowers.

🌸 Purple in Nature and Flowers

Purple is a special color in nature because it is relatively rare. Many flowers use bright purple petals to attract bees and butterflies. Some animals also use purple to blend in with flowers or to warn predators that they might taste bad!

πŸ”¬ Science Corner: Purple in the Rainbow

When sunlight passes through raindrops, it creates a rainbow. A rainbow always has seven colors in this order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.

Violet is at the very end of the visible spectrum. It has the shortest waves and the highest frequency of light we can see. Interestingly, "Purple" isn't technically in the rainbow spectrum; it is a non-spectral color created by our brains when we see Red and Blue light mixed together. So, while Violet is a spectral color, Purple is a mix!
