The scientific method sounds formal, but at its core it's just a structured way of asking "what happens if...?" and finding out — a process kids already do naturally in play, just without the formal labels.

Any of our kitchen science experiments work well for practicing this full sequence — before starting, ask "what do you think will happen?" (hypothesis), do the experiment (test), ask "what did you notice?" (observe), and then "was your guess right?" (conclude). The formal vocabulary can come later; the thinking pattern is what matters first.
Skipping straight to the demonstration without asking for a prediction first removes the most valuable part of the process — the guess is what turns a science demonstration into actual scientific thinking.
A wrong guess is a completely normal, valuable part of the process, not a failure to correct or feel bad about. Explaining that real scientists are wrong often — that being wrong is actually how new things get discovered — models genuine scientific thinking far better than treating every guess as a test to pass or fail.
An observation is what was directly seen or measured ("the water turned blue"). A conclusion is the explanation drawn from that observation ("the food coloring mixed through the water"). Young scientists often blend the two together without realizing it — gently asking "is that what you saw, or what you think it means?" helps separate them.
