Show the real plant and ask: "What parts of this plant can you name?" List student answers on the board without correcting yet.
Point to each part of the real plant and introduce its name and function: Roots (anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients from soil), Stem (supports the plant and carries water up to the leaves), Leaves (use sunlight to make food for the plant), Flower (helps the plant reproduce by making seeds). Use simple, concrete language rather than technical terms like "photosynthesis."
As a class, label a large plant diagram together on the board, discussing each part's function again as it's added. Ask "why does the plant need this part?" for each one to reinforce function, not just naming.
Students label their own blank plant diagram and color each part, then circle the part they think is most important and be ready to explain why (there's no single correct answer here โ the goal is reasoning).
A few students share which part they circled and why, comparing different reasonable answers as a class.
Check that all four parts are correctly labeled on the independent diagram, and that when asked, students can state at least a simple function for each part (not necessarily word-for-word, but showing real understanding).
Support: Provide a word bank with the four part names for labeling. Extension: Ask advanced students to research and add one additional plant part (like seeds or fruit) and its function.
