Ask: "Who are some people who help us in our community?" List student answers on the board without judging completeness — this surfaces what students already know.
Introduce 3-4 community helper roles (firefighter, doctor, mail carrier, teacher) one at a time, showing a picture or prop for each and explaining specifically how that person helps others — not just their job title, but the actual help they provide ("firefighters keep us safe by putting out fires and rescuing people").
As a class, do a simple role-play: one student wears or holds a prop for a community helper while the class asks "what do you do to help us?" and the student (with teacher support) answers in character. Rotate through a few different roles.
Students draw a picture of a community helper of their choice and, with adult support if needed, write or dictate one sentence describing how that person helps the community.
A few students share their drawing and sentence with the class, building a shared understanding of the range of helper roles covered.
Check that the drawn helper is correctly identified and that the accompanying sentence describes a real, specific way that role helps the community, rather than just restating the job title.
Support: Provide a sentence starter ("A firefighter helps by ___") for the independent writing task. Extension: Ask advanced students to name a community helper not already discussed in class and explain their role.
