Meet the amazing Tulip!
The Tulip is a cup-shaped spring flower.
A tulip grows from a bulb, a little underground food store with a baby plant tucked inside. Bulbs are planted in autumn, and the winter cold tells them when it is time to grow. In spring, using the food stored in the bulb, the tulip sends up leaves and a single cup-shaped flower. After it flowers, the leaves make food to fill up the bulb again for next year.
Tulips first grew wild in the mountains of Central Asia and Turkey. Today the Netherlands grows billions of tulip bulbs a year, and visitors come to see its striped tulip fields in spring. You can plant tulip bulbs in a garden or a pot in autumn and watch them bloom a few months later.
Where does the Tulip usually grow?
Have children draw tulips in as many colors as they can imagine, then talk about how real tulips come in every color except true blue.
If possible, plant a real tulip bulb in the fall and check on it as spring approaches. Talk about how the petals open in sunlight and close at night.
