Meet the amazing Banana Plant!
The Banana Plant is a giant herb with huge leaves.
A banana plant grows from an underground stem called a corm. Huge leaves unroll from the center and wrap tightly around each other to make a soft, juicy 'trunk' called a pseudostem. After about nine months, a big purple flower bud pushes out of the top, and rows of tiny flowers along its stalk grow into bunches, called hands, of bananas.
Banana plants grow in hot, rainy tropical places, such as India, Ecuador, the Philippines, Uganda and Brazil. Bananas are picked while still green and ripen on their journey to shops. Their leaves are used to wrap food for cooking, and the fibers from the plant can be made into rope, paper and cloth.
Where does the Banana Plant usually grow?
Bring in a real banana leaf picture or a large green leaf and compare its size to a dinner plate, then talk about why people in some countries use banana leaves as natural plates.
Peel a real banana together and talk about how it grows on a giant plant that is actually an herb, not a tree.
No — it's actually the world's largest herb, with a "trunk" made of leaf stalks.
Just one giant bunch before a new shoot takes over.
As natural, disposable plates for serving food in some countries.
Warm, tropical countries with sunlight, water, and rich soil.
