Mercury looks a lot like our Moon, covered in craters!
Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and the closest one to the Sun! Even though it's tiny (only a little bigger than Earth's Moon), it is super fast. Mercury zooms around the Sun faster than any other planet, completing a full trip in just 88 Earth days. Because it is so close to the Sun, it gets incredibly hot during the day, but because it has almost no air to hold the heat, it freezes at night. It's a world of extreme opposites! Let's race over to learn more about this speedy little world.

🌡️ A Planet of Extremes: Boiling and Freezing!
Mercury has the most extreme temperature changes of any planet:
Super Hot Day: Because it is so close to the Sun, the daytime temperature can reach 800°F (430°C)! That's hot enough to melt lead and zinc.
Super Cold Night: Mercury has almost no atmosphere (air) to trap the heat. So, as soon as the Sun sets, all the heat escapes into space. The temperature drops to -290°F (-180°C)!
No Seasons: Unlike Earth, Mercury doesn't tilt much, so it doesn't have seasons. It's always hot on the sunny side and freezing on the dark side.
If you visited Mercury, you would need a suit that could keep you cool AND warm at the same time!
🌑 A Bumpy, Cratered Surface
If you looked at Mercury, you might think you were looking at Earth's Moon! Its surface is gray and covered in thousands of craters (holes made by asteroids and comets crashing into it billions of years ago).
No Air: Mercury has a very thin layer of gases called an "exosphere," but it's not enough to breathe or protect the planet from space rocks. That's why it has so many craters.
Cliffs: Mercury has huge cliffs called "scarps" that are miles high. They formed when the planet cooled down and shrank, causing the crust to wrinkle like a dried-up apple!
Ice? Surprisingly, scientists think there might be ice hidden deep inside some craters at the North and South poles where the Sun never shines!
🏎️ The Speed Racer of the Solar System
Mercury is named after the Roman messenger god who wore winged sandals and could run very fast. The planet lives up to its name!
Fast Orbit: It travels around the Sun at about 29 miles per second (47 km/s). That's much faster than Earth!
Because it moves so fast and is so close to the Sun, a year on Mercury (one trip around the Sun) is only 88 Earth days. You could celebrate your birthday four times in one Earth year if you lived on Mercury!
Slow Spin: Even though it orbits fast, it spins very slowly on its axis. It takes 59 Earth days to spin around once.
🚀 Amazing Mercury Facts
Smallest Planet: Mercury is even smaller than some moons in our solar system, like Jupiter's moon Ganymede and Saturn's moon Titan!
No Moons: Mercury (and Venus) are the only two planets that don't have any moons orbiting them.
Shrinking: Mercury is still shrinking today! As its iron core cools, the whole planet gets slightly smaller.
Hard to Visit: Even though it's close to the Sun, it's very hard for spacecraft to visit Mercury because the Sun's gravity pulls so hard. Only two missions (Mariner 10 and MESSENGER) have ever visited it!
Bright Star: Sometimes you can see Mercury in the sky just before sunrise or after sunset. It looks like a bright star near the horizon.
Iron Core: Mercury has a huge iron core that makes up most of the planet. It's like a giant metal ball with a thin rocky shell.
🛰️ Visiting Mercury
Because Mercury is so close to the Sun, it's very difficult for robots to go there without getting burned or pulled into the Sun.
Mariner 10 (1974): This was the first spacecraft to fly by Mercury. It took the first close-up pictures of its cratered surface.
MESSENGER (2011-2015): This NASA spacecraft orbited Mercury for four years! It mapped the whole planet, found evidence of ice at the poles, and studied its magnetic field.
BepiColombo: A new mission from Europe and Japan is currently on its way to Mercury to study it even more closely.

Question: How long is a year on Mercury?
Challenge: Imagine running around your house 4 times in the time it takes your friend to walk around once. That's how fast Mercury moves compared to Earth!
