Exploring the wonder of a volcano!
A Volcano is a mountain with an opening that can release hot melted rock.
A volcano is an opening in Earth's crust where melted rock, called magma, comes up from deep underground. When pressure builds up, the magma pushes through the opening and erupts as lava, ash and gas. Over many eruptions, the cooled lava and ash pile up around the opening and build the cone-shaped mountain we think of as a volcano.
Many volcanoes are found around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, in an area called the Ring of Fire. Famous volcanoes include Mount Etna in Italy, Mount Fuji in Japan and Kilauea in Hawaii, where visitors can sometimes see glowing lava from a safe viewing area.
What is a Volcano?
Make a simple baking soda and vinegar volcano eruption (adult supervised), then talk about how real lava is hot melted rock.
Have children draw a mountain with glowing lava coming out, and talk about scientists called volcanologists who study volcanoes.
