Discover the Memory Card!
A Memory Card is used for storing photos, videos, and files inside cameras and phones.
A memory card stores information in a special kind of computer chip called flash memory. The chip is made of billions of tiny cells that can each hold a little electric charge or no charge, which stands for a 1 or a 0. Photos, videos and songs are all saved as long patterns of 1s and 0s, and they stay there even when the power is off.
You will find memory cards inside digital cameras, drones, action cameras, some game consoles and car dash cameras. Most memory cards have a tiny lock switch on the side, which stops anyone from deleting the files by accident.
What is a Memory Card used for?
If possible, show children a real memory card and compare its tiny size to a coin, then talk about how much it can hold inside.
Draw a camera with a memory card tucked inside, and talk about how it saves all the photos you take.
Digital information, like photos and videos.
Cameras, game consoles, and some phones.
Bigger cards hold more.
Small enough to fit on a fingertip.
Comparing its size to a coin, drawing a camera with a memory card, talking about saving photos, or coloring a printable worksheet.
